Business Rates or 'non-domestic rates', as they are sometimes known, are a tax payable in respect of all occupied and some unoccupied business premises.
They are payable to Swindon Borough Council, who collect them on behalf of the Government.
The Business Rates collected by local authorities are paid into a central pool and re-distributed to local authorities based on per head of population.
Swindon's share of re-distributed rate income, together with income from its Council Tax payers, revenue support grant provided by the Government, and income collected from services, is used to pay for the services we provide.
